Name: Kevin Barry
Years of surfing: 15
Has surfing helped you become a better person? If so, how?
“Oh yes,” Kevin says without hesitation. He takes a moment to reflect on all of the years he has been surfing. The first thing that comes up is, “my buddies and I use to call it church.” He chuckles, and says how it provided/provides him an outlet, “a way to release energy.” Kevin further explains that he use to have an addiction to alcohol, has always been hyper-active, and had issues sleeping. With the ocean by his side, “I have recovered from my old habits, I now can release my energy in the water, and fill/fuel myself with surfing.” He elaborates on how, “it seems simple, but I use to have a tough time sleeping through the night, surfing really helps that. It allows me to release a lot of energy, it keeps me more calm. It not only helps me physically, but mentally and emotionally as well.” I can relate, and he concludes- “If I’m not near the ocean, I experience a bit of anxiety.”
Kevin works as a surf instructor and has recently welcomed his first little one into this world. His enthusiasm for surfing and life is radiant. Kevin- I wish you the best!
