Name: Michael Fleming (AKA Wino)
Age: 62 years young
Years surfing: 50 +
From: Maryland, USA
Wino’s passion for surfing is probably recognizable from outer-space. His radiant smile lingers long after an epic surf session. And the stories he has from over 50 years on the water, can hit every aspect of one’s emotional spectrum.
How surfing has impacted his life…
He explains “it’s a way of life,” there is no substitution. The words glide off of his lips as matter-of-fact. He sees surfing as his foundation, in which many things grow. Most importantly the fruit of connections, blossoming friendships. From the crew that took him under their wings and got him into his first waves, to the strangers that after an hour surf session, were no longer strangers. From fellow surfers he has met while competing in surf competitions, to the kids that he now watches out for while in the water. He considers everyone “family,” connected by the bloodline of surfing.
It doesn’t stop there though. Wino exudes, “when I get in the water, everything changes.” “Worries fade, and positivity is everywhere.” We chat about the physical, mental, and emotional benefits of surfing, he expresses, “those are bonus features!” It’s a blessing that one activity can touch on so many realms of life.
To Wino though, the true essence of surfing, continues to root back to the relations with others. He notes how surfing does help him on a physical level and fuels him with mental positivity, however, “it has united me with so many amazing people, that in and of itself, has changed/shaped my life.”
At 62 years young, Wino continues to paddle out regularly. Embedded in his soul, surfing truly is a way of life for this man. It’s safe to say, he would be a completely different person without the ocean.
Cheers to another, “well said Wednesday!” Thank you for being you Wino! You are an inspiration to many! I always love surfing with you.
