Your off-white tint, smooth edges and rippled surface blended in with all of the rest, but I was drawn to you. With a curious eye, I knelt down and flipped you over. In doing so, I discovered a whole new you, from the inside out. The depths of you spoke to my heart. Your hidden beauty enlivened my soul.
The colors, the layers, and the patterns that had been buried, facedown, for who knows how long, were now exposed. “Beauty of the natural kind,” a smile appeared on my face. The sunlight peaked over my shoulder, hugging you in its’ warmth. The brightness revealed the rims of your coat, the “protective” stratums you have worn so well. But the weathering. The weathering from the elements have begun to dissolve the outer casting of you- slowly eating away at the whites and pink tints. It amazes me- you will soon be left with your true color, purple, of which is at your very depths. Not to fear though, what has been, is not wasted. For it will return to the sand, and thus is still serving you, but never again encasing you. Never again hiding your true beauty.
I rubbed this shell, picked it up, gave it a kiss, then raised it to the sun in utmost gratitude for teaching me…
Teaching me that- Sometimes in order to discover the beauty of a shell, you must simply flip it over.
