Yoga and surfing, surfing and yoga. I’m often asked if one compliments the other, and if so how? This is what I experience and what I have observed…
Surfing and yoga are very much alike. Whether one knows it or not, when beginning each endeavor, the individual starts tapping into something beyond our five senses. It’s like another intelligence is sparked, another realm is opened, and curiosity expands beyond what meets the eye. At first it comes and goes. While your practicing it seems to be there, then you step off your mat or out of the water and poof it’s gone. However, over time, the awareness, sensations, and sense of unity becomes part of who you are and ventures with you into your daily life.
You’ll notice that you also discover a LOT about yourself when your on your mat or in the ocean. You may discover patterns, “safety nets,” doubts, and fears that have held you back from progressing in your practice and in your life. You may also discover that you are braver than you think, how tenacious you can be, and how much of a badass you are if you only let yourself be… you. These practices are catalysts to self-discovery because they are a direct reflection of how you live your life.
On a physical note, this pair also complements each other. They are each beautiful courageous dances of flexibility and strength (mind and body). In each case this duo, of strength and flexibility, must be honored or progression will come to a halt. Additionally, yoga can be a great way to keep your range of motion in check between surf sessions, while surfing takes all you have learned on your mat and puts it to the test.
I could go on and on about this epic combination, but I’ll stop here, the waves are calling my name! Cheers! For more information please feel free to DM me. PS- look out for ways you can get try both of these activities in an upcoming retreat!
